John Mulaney talks candidly about his union with Olivia Munn.

On Monday, August 12, the comedian, 41, spoke about his marriage to the actress for the first time when he appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers. He told Meyers, 50, “I got married.” He chuckled broadly and raised his hand to reveal his wedding ring, saying, “It’s the best.”

Then, as he was sitting in the audience, he called out to his mother-in-law, Kim Schmid, saying, “Hi, Mom!” Mulaney clarified, “I call her Mom now,” in response to Meyers stating that Kim is Munn’s mother. We were married, like you mentioned, so I now refer to her as Mom.”

Mulaney remarked, “This is the single greatest time in my life,” when asked how he felt about his new in-laws. He also claimed that getting married to Munn, 44, was “one of the most fun things I’ve ever done.”

“I’ve encountered several amazing circumstances. He went on, “Marrying into a large Vietnamese family is one of the most fun things I’ve ever done,” drawing laughter from the audience with his humorously dry manner. “But they’re the best, man.”

“One of them will come with you everywhere,” he joked about his in-laws before clarifying that they always “call me John Mulaney — full name.” Always use your full name: “Olivia is here with John Mulaney.”

The comedian went on to say that, in sharp contrast to his own family, Munn’s family doesn’t hesitate to be blunt. He clarified, “My family is white and Caucasian, so we’re worried about a lot of topics.” Health, money, almost anything – practically everything is taboo. The Luong family, as soon as they meet you, they start talking about anything. “What is your income?” “Why are you so thin?”

A close friend of Mulaney’s told PEOPLE last month that Mulaney and Munn tied the knot in a small ceremony at their home in New York state. The only family members present at the wedding were their 2-year-old son Malcolm and a witness. The registrar was Munn’s costar from The Newsroom, Sam Waterston.

The couple’s relationship was first made public in May 2021 by PEOPLE. Mulaney and Munn announced their dual pregnancy in September of that year during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

He said to Meyers at the time, “I went to Los Angeles in the spring and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia.” “I started dating this amazing person, and it’s been incredibly nice. And together, we’re expecting a child. As I was going to break the news, I was anxious.”

On November 24, 2021, their son Malcolm was born.

The news of Mulaney and Munn’s wedding was revealed a few months after the Love Wedding Repeat star revealed her breast cancer diagnosis to the public. After tests showed that Munn had luminal B, a fast-moving, aggressive cancer, in both breasts, she was given a bilateral breast cancer diagnosis in 2023.

She thanked Mulaney for helping her through her challenging treatment path when she revealed the news of her health in an Instagram post on March 13.

“I’m incredibly appreciative of my friends’ and family’s love during this time. She continued, “I’m very grateful to John for the many hours he spent learning about the significance of each procedure, drug, and the side effects and recovery I may expect. “For always being there before each step, for being there when I woke up, and for carefully placing framed pictures of our baby Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.”

Without Mulaney, Munn eventually told PEOPLE, navigating her cancer journey would have seemed like “climbing an iceberg.”

Between being a very involved father and travelling to and from the hospital — taking Malcolm to the park, putting him to sleep, driving to Cedars-Sinai, hanging out with me, going home, putting Malcolm to bed, and then returning to me — I don’t think he had a moment to himself, she said. “And he completed it all with joy.”
